A Shopify theme controls how your storefront looks and how shoppers move through it. Installing a new theme does not replace your products, collections, or pages, but its section settings and visual choices need their own setup.
The right installation path depends on where you got the theme. A theme from the Shopify Theme Store is added through Shopify. A legitimate theme file from another source can be imported as a ZIP. Both paths give you a draft to review before it becomes your live design.
Choose the right way to add the theme
If you are trying a paid theme in the Shopify Theme Store, use its Try theme option. You can preview and customize it in your admin, but Shopify requires a purchase before you publish it. If you have a theme ZIP supplied for your store, use the upload route below instead. Keep the original file intact as a backup.
Upload a Shopify theme ZIP
Make sure the theme files are compressed into one ZIP file. Do not upload a folder or an unrelated archive.
- Open your Shopify admin and go to Online Store.
- In Draft themes, choose Import theme, then Upload zip file.
- Choose the theme ZIP from your computer and click Upload.
- Wait for the theme to appear in Draft themes before you start editing it.
Customize the draft with your real store content
Open the draft in Shopify's theme editor. Work with your actual products and photography, not only the theme's demo. Set the logo, colors, typography, and navigation first; then review the home page, a collection, a product page, the cart, and any pages you use to answer customer questions.
- Replace demo copy and images with your own content and check image crops at narrow widths.
- Adjust sections and blocks so the most useful information appears before secondary details.
- Check theme-specific settings and app blocks. They may need to be configured again when you switch themes.
Preview before you publish
Use the draft theme's Preview action and browse like a customer. Check the menu, search, product options, add-to-cart flow, and footer links on both desktop and mobile. A preview link can help you collect feedback without changing the live theme.
Publish when the store is ready
In Online Store, find the theme under Draft themes and choose Publish. Shopify moves the previously published theme back to Draft themes, so the old design is still available. Publishing a theme changes the storefront design; it does not by itself change whether your store is private or public.
